Over the last few weeks there have been a lot of discussions, passionate to hateful on the need and behaviour of the so called heads of various religious and communal cults. We are inundated with Headlines and stories, from Electronic to Written Media, every household in the country and many groups across the Globe, are appalled to read about this so called Godman and his antics. This is just the beginning or may I say we are in the middle of something that is both ugly and indigestible in the today’s world of the 21st century.
Indians and a few other nationals across the globe are watching the trail and sentencing of one of the most heinous criminal in India – the self-proclaimed Baba – Gurmeet RamRahim Singh. Unfortunately in today’s scenario India is full of self-proclaimed Babas’, Swamis’, and a few others to choose from.
Today the nexus between the Politicians, Religious Organisation Heads, and Criminals is so ingrained that it is indeed difficult to even enter these forbidden areas for investigations, let alone have the courage and ability to sustain a complaint against them.
The kind of violence that was unleashed by the followers of this Criminal Godman, when the judgement was read was incredible and tragic to see the number of innocents that died, and this was just the tip of the iceberg.
How do these Babas emerge and evolve, they are mostly uneducated, and have risen from nowhere to become very powerful, even in the Political Circles. What is the threat or charisma that these kinds of criminals have that they can hold masses and the political leader’s ransom?
A quick analysis can throw some light onto what makes the masses in this country follow Babas, and Swamis. In a country where the poor are oppressed under variousguises, where caste is a major reason for oppression among the various religions orders, it is but natural that the fallout will be in Cults and Cult Heads, some good and some criminals. There have been a few religions that have been born out of Hinduism; these new religions promise a casteless society to the converts. These religions promise them safety and opportunity, the reality is that the people who have converted are still oppressed in their new religions too. This combined with the continued poverty, illiteracy, oppression and hopelessness for the future, are some of the key factors where the masses get lured into following cults and Cult Heads. They are promised dignity, educations, food and opportunity, this is enough for them, the masses are not concerned with the personal lives of the cult head, and they are only concerned about the survival of their families and themselves. Add to this, these cult followers see that the Political Leaders from the Centre and State give respect and money to these cult heads and that is the seal of approval which is enough to convince them that they are on the right path and the Cult Heads is their true Baba – Father figure.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh: Indian court sentences ‘Godman’ to 20 years in prison for rape
Sentencing rogue Godman Baba RamRahim to 20 years of imprisonment:
Justifying the sentence Jagdeep Singh judge quoted Mahatma Gandhi as saying, “To call woman the weaker sex is a libel; it’s man’s injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, indeed, woman is less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then woman is immediately man’s superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she of more self-sacrificing has she not greater powers of endurance, has she not greater courage? Without her, man could not be. If non-violence is the law of our being, the future is with woman. Who can make a more effective to heart than woman?
Some of the headlines in various print and electronic media:

Wasn’t scared of him then nor now, say woman who unmasked Ram Rahim
The CBI convinced 18 women to give evidence against the Dera chief but only two deposed against him in court, leading to his conviction.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim to court: Allow Honeypreet to remain with me as she is my masseuse

Looking at the way Self Proclaimed Babas, and Swamis’ are mushrooming in India and many of them prey on the so called followers across the world, the question raises as to who makes these individuals so powerful..
Is it only us the gullible population? But aren’t we literate, educated, knowledgeable? Then why do we fall for such gimmicks and unscrupulous people? How much are the Politicians, Criminals and Celebrities involved in making these people rich and famous, powerful lords of the nether world.
It is time we started doing something about this phenomena that is both harmful to the country and the people across. Their Assets and Ashrams need to be kept in surveillance 24/7, ensuring the visibility and identity of the people, followers who visit these so called Sants. Proper investigation on the funding and any complaints should be done immediately and investigating authorities should at all times be impeccable and clean, and not bow to any coercion.
There will be more about the Babas and Swamis’ for you to read about. Your comments are welcome.
