High on Thai!!!

March 20, 2015

I am getting addicted to Thai food in Australia. Thai is the most popular cuisine here. Every happening restaurant strip, street or mall food court has at least one Thai place.

But Bang Rak Thai gave me a foodgasm and now I am finding it difficult to beat this one with any other Thai joint. Bang Rak Thai is one of the most crowded eateries at The Entrance’s bustling shopping strip. This nine-month-old stand alone Thai restaurant is already making waves. It has a simple, serene decor and seating arrangement set up with many Buddha wall hangings, statues and traditional Thai hand fans.

It envelops you in the flavours and perfumes of Thailand by celebrating the sweet heat of the region’s cooking and just about everything in the kitchen is prepared from scratch. And, the best part about Bang Rak Thai is that vegetarian food here is equally good and it has more choices for non-meat eaters than just typical veg Thai fried rice.

We love the way the sweet and fiery notes and soft and crunchy textures snuggle together — be it the crunchy spring rolls or Som Tum (Papaya Salad). We heard from many that their Goong Yang (BBQ king prawns) are superb; grilled king prawns coated in Thai spices served with vegetables in garlic-pepper and tasty peanut sauces. Another must try is Nam Prik Pow Gai (chilli jam and cashew nuts). A favourite among Thai people, this dish brings together stir fried roasted cashews, chilli jam and sizzling onion in perfect harmony with fresh seasonal vegetables (or chicken if you prefer). And if you love it spicy, then go for Kow Pad Hor Lapa (chilli basil fried rice) – our personal favourite!

The trio owners, Paul, his wife Money and Chef Freddy, are very enterprising and keep innovating. Don’t hesitate to ask them if you want any dish customised. For the thrifty diners, they have their express lunch meal for just $9.90. So when you’re at The Entrance, treat your taste buds to some Bang Rak Thai.
