Introducing singer/sitar player ROSïE

April 2, 2014

For ROSïE, music is more important than food. She sings in her sleep and danced before she walked. During a childhood spent between India, Hong Kong & Sydney, Rosie imbibed music, breathing in life and exhaling song. For 8 years of her early childhood she went to a boarding school situated at the foothills of the Himalayas in Dharamsala India, where she learnt sitar from the age of 9, and kuchipurdi dance. Becoming proficient in sitar, dance & singing saw Rosie perform before crowds of thousands in India from the age of 10, and at 13 she began to write songs, accompanying herself on guitar.

Once re-settling in Australia, she continued to study and perform music – in the contemporary as well as classical indian realm. As a multi-instrumentalist & singer, she was highly sought after, and in 2007 Australian/Israeli rock/fusion band – Old Man River – scouted her to join the band as sitar front girl & backing vocalist. Together they toured all over Australia and played shows in Japan, Korea, Singapore etc.

ROSïE’s passion continues to lie in classical Indian music as well as jazz & soul music, so she aims to fuse her sitar skills into this more contemporary context. You will often see her performing live with her band ROSïE + THE BEES in trio mode, where she sings and switches between playing electric bass, guitar & sitar.

ROSïE has been heavily involved in performing at Parramasala South Asian Arts Festival. For 2011 & 2012, she played sitar with 10-piece Indian-fusion band Tablatronics, and for the 2013 festival she played along side Maharshi Raval (Tabla), Cheryl Khurana (Kathak dance) & Pena Flamenca (Spanish flamenco group) as Project Red Sun for a successful Indian-Flamenco fusion performance.

ROSïE has just released her debut album, titled ROSïE + THE BEES. You can enjoy her playing sitar on 2 of the tracks, as well as a guest performance from the amazing Maharshi Raval on tabla for 2 songs. For the rest of the tracks, sit back and enjoy some contemporary jazz/soul, with just a touch of Indian flavour.
