Luscious Lips

March 17, 2014

How can a discussion on lips be far behind when we covered eyes last month. It is timely to talk lips as my level of care for my lips changes when there is a change in season.

The skin on our lips is thin & delicate, so much so that it is transparent. This is why lips have their rosy colour. Protecting them from the elements is vital for both health & appearance. Lips need protection from the sun, wind and even air conditioning. For this reason it is important to have a lip balm of at least 15+, especially in summer. Spring cleaning also applies to your lips, ridding them of any dead skin that has accumulated over the colder months. Apply lanolin to the lips and leave it to absorb for half an hour before using a mixture of bicarbonate soda and water to gently exfoliate. You can use a dry baby toothbrush for this process. There are lip conditioning treatments available year round that combat dryness caused by eating & drinking, swimming, being in air conditioning and to protect them against the sun and rain.

Lucas papaw ointment works for me and my clients. Before applying make up I leave the ointment on the lips to soften them and remove any dead skin escpecially if the client asks for a bright coloured lipstick to be applied. I wipe the ointment off before applying lipstick.

When choosing a lip colour, it is important to take your skin tone into consideration. Figure out if you are warm or cool (generally warm skin tone tans easily where as cool toned people have a more English-rose complexion). Warm skin tones go well with yellow based colours, like an orange red while cool red in lipstick would be suggested for a cooler skin tone.

Use lip liner with bright coloured lipsticks to prevent lipstick bleeding.

For a fuller lip, apply a highlight colour to the cupid’s bow prior to lipstick application.

When testing lip colours, try it on fingertips as they are the same tone as your lips.

Autumn colours – As the weather gets chilly, lip colour trends change too. This is an excellent time to introduce darker shades of plum, brown and metallics.

My pick for this season MAC Viva Glam III, a muted brownish-plum lipstick in matte.
