Mr Morrison announced the date after talks with the Governor General in the capital, Canberra.
Australians will vote for the next federal government on May 21 after Scott Morrison visited Government House in Canberra on Sunday to officially call the election.
The Prime Minister’s decision means Australians will head to the polls at the latest possible date.
“It’s a choice between a strong future and an uncertain one. It’s a choice between a government you know and a Labor opposition that you don’t,” the prime minister said on Sunday.
“This election and this campaign are incredibly important because there is so much at stake for Australia and our future,” he said at Parliament House.
“This election is about you. No one else. It’s about our country and its future.”
