In recent times, there has been a growing interest in the arts amongst South Asian youth. The explosion of social media has provided a medium for young, ambitious and talented individuals to share their work. Many aspiring artists have gone on to pursue further study in theatre, visual arts, music and dance. However, the opportunity to showcase their work to the wider community has been lacking. As a result, aspiring artists have struggled to build careers and develop a following. This has prevented South Asian youth from pursuing worthwhile artistic interests and creatively influencing their communities.
In recognising the need to provide a platform for South Asian artists, Showcase was launched in 2013. The concept of Showcase is simple. It is a concert that features a diverse range of talented South Asian artists who are pushing boundaries in their respective spheres. Performers operate across a variety of artistic styles, ranging from song to dance as well as other less conventional forms of entertainment.
Showcase began in 2013 when a group of passionate youth came together with a vision to celebrate young South Asian talent. The event was sold out and featured ten amazing performances that engaged and inspired those in attendance. While Showcase 2013 was an overwhelming success, there is still work to do.
In 2014, Showcase will look to attract the best artists across Sydney’s South Asian communities. Not only do we want our chosen artists to share their incredible talents, we also want to know their story. Showcase 2014 will uncover the pages of history that gave rise to our artists’ personal, cultural and artistic journeys. To top it all off, the show will raise funds to support two worthy causes working to develop underprivileged communities in Australia and South Asia.
