A strike force has been formed to investigate the death of a woman in Westmead overnight.
Strike Force Marcoala (pronounced mah-cola) comprises police from Parramatta Local Area Command, with assistance from detectives from State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
They are investigating an attack on a woman on a public walkway between Amos Street and Argyle Street about 9.30pm yesterday (Saturday 8 March 2015).
The woman, believed to be in her early 40s, was treated at the scene before being transported to Westmead Hospital, where she died about 12.45am today.
Police stress the woman is yet to be formally identified.
It’s believed the woman got off a train at Parramatta Railway Station about 9pm, before walking along Argyle Street and turning left onto the walkway.
A post mortem is being conducted today to determine the cause of the woman’s death; however, early investigations suggest she died as a result of a wound inflicted by a sharp-edged weapon.
A crime scene has been established at the scene for forensic examination.
NSW State Emergency Service volunteers are conducting line searches of grassed areas on either side of the walkway.
Police attached to Strike Force Marcoala are appealing for information from the public to assist with their inquiries into the incident.
Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/ Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence.
